Garden & Balcony Home Living

Welcome To Our Balcony Garden

June 18, 2013

Some of you might remember how I started my first vegetable garden back home in Hamburg. To grow our own food was such a fun and exciting experience. It not only made me appreciate the food more but also made me feel more connected with nature. It’s really fascinating to watch a little seed become a plant that grows flowers, which eventually become fruit or vegetables.

When we moved to Switzerland last winter, I knew that we would gonna move into an apartment, which got me a bit sad, because that would mean no garden. But it didn’t turn out to be so bad after all. We were lucky to find a place that has a big balcony with lots of room for planting. So a couple of weeks ago, I started my new mission: the balcony garden.

A lot of the herbs were already planted on the balcony when we moved there, which is great because they are grown quite big already. But I started to add all kind of vegetables, flowers and some fruit to the balcony. So far we have these plants: zucchini, broccoli, tomato, chili, red pepper, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, pumpkin, leek, salad, basil,ย marjoram, oregano, rosemary, thyme, sage, mint and parsley. I’m really excited to grow them and see if the balcony garden will be a success.

We also bought furniture for the balcony which we got as second-hand on an online auction. It was a cheaper AND (most importantly) a more eco friendly choice. Win-win!

I also try to encourage animals to visit our balcony, by growing flowers, putting up a bee house (which is being used a lot!) and a bird house / feeder. I still want to add a little bird bath and small spaces for insects. Any other ideas? I’m glad for any advice! : )

You don\’t know how jealous I am! My balcony is exactely big enough for a tiny little table and to chairs ๐Ÿ˜‰ But I am still thankful for the rosemary, basil, tomatoes and strawberries growing on it! I love being outside and growing my own tomatoes ๐Ÿ™‚
